Halite

Halite is a mineral name for ‘salt’. The chemical name of it is sodium chloride. A rock composed majorly of halite is called as rock salt. Halite is known to be a sedimentary mineral that forms in all kinds of arid climates where the water from the ocean evaporates. Today, the formation of halite is also taking place in a number of inland lakes such as the Dead Sea between Jordan and Israel and the Great Salt Lake of North America.

Over a long period of time, various enormous salt deposits have been formed and gathered and the repeated episodes of the seat water evaporation have occurred in the restricted basins to help in the formation of halite. Some of these deposits are thousand feet thick and when buried deeply, they could erupt in order to form salt domes.

Physical Properties of Halite:

  • Chemical composition: Sodium Chloride, NaCl.
  • Color: Halite is usually clear and white in color but little amount of impurities give it an orange or a red hue.
  • Cleavage: Three fair cleavages at the right angles which eventually produce cubes.
  • Hardness:5
  • Specific gravity: ranging from 2.1 to 2.6 respectively.
  • Luster: Massive form of halite is dull, the crystals are usually glass-like.
  • Streak: White
  • Diaphaneity: Halite is transparent to translucent.
  • Crystal system: Isometric
  • Diagnostic Properties: Solubility, cleavage, salty taste.

Advantages/Medicinal properties of Halite:

Halite, also known as rock salt is full of advantages, especially medicinal properties. Halite is known to be comprising of various healing properties. Some of them are listed below:

  • Anti-flatulent
  • Antacid
  • Hematogenic
  • Expectorant
  • Carminative
  • Digestive Stimulant
  • Antioxidant, because of trace minerals
  • Anti-inflammatory.

How is Halite taken into use?

Halite has a number of uses. Most of the salt so produced is crushed and the same is used during the winter season on to the roads in order to control and ward off the accumulation of ice and snow. Significant amount of halite is also used by the chemical industry. Apart from this, halite is also used as a seasoning in various types of food. Following are the basic uses of halite:

  1. It is used in cooking as a flavor enhances. Large pieces of halite are grounded into salt and the same is being used as a finishing salt.
  2. Halite is taken into use for both residential and municipal purposes for the management of ice, this is because it has a lower freezing point and hence it causes the ice to melt quicker.
  3. A mixture of halite and salt is used on the roads by a number of cities in order to improve the traction after snowstorm.
  4. Halite is also used in the process of agriculture.

Health benefits of Halite:
